Chon Saan Palace Restaurant

The Chon Saan Palace Chinese restaurant opened for business in Belize City in 1974, and has become one of the city’s oldest establishments. We have mentioned before that nine out of ten restaurants here are owned and operated by Belizeans of Chinese descent. Chon Saan could easily be considered the premier ethnic restaurant in the entire country.

As you enter the pleasant, air-conditioned dining room, you will first notice the live seafood tanks which are so prevalent in the upscale restaurants of Hong Kong or San Francisco. These are filled with locally farmed Australian lobsters and white shrimp (which are available even during the closure of the sea fisheries) as well as the daily catch of fin fish.

The Chon Saan menu has over 200 well prepared items, and covers your traditional favorites, such as Sweet & Sour dishes, Chow Mein, and egg rolls (all delicious). But for a change of pace, go to the list of “Specials” and try delicacies such as Steamed Lobster in Black Bean Sauce, Chow Mein Singapore Style, Shrimp with Cashew Nuts or Crab Claws Chinese Style. These dishes are all available in a small size for (US)$7.50 or large for $14.50.

The small size is plenty for two to four people, if you are sharing a number of dishes in the Chinese style. Four people could enjoy a real banquet here and rarely spend more than (US)$15.00 each. If the menu is all too confusing, just choose a combination plate, which includes soup, an egg roll and two or three other choices; priced at around (US)$10 to $12.

Located at #1 Kelly Street, Chon Saan Palace is only about a five minute taxi ride from most of the major hotels.
