Underwater in the Seven Wonders of the World – Belize Barrier Reef

Located in the city of Belize, this lovely natural mountainous structure is the largest of this kind of reefs in the western hemisphere and is also the second of its kind in the world. None can compare to its magnificence and beauty.

As the Atlantic Caribbean Coast is made beautiful with the Belizian coast, this Belize Barrier Reef lies around 300km from the coast. It belongs to the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef system. Expanding around 260km, this has been certified as one of the Seven Wonders of the World under the CEDAM.
Home to the best kind of ecosystem, this is the largest reef which has lovely formations of corals, a variety of fish and innumerable invertebrates. The Belize Sea sees some of the loveliest corals residing in this water body. The amazing lagoon patch reefs and the fringing reefs besides the offshore atolls make up the Belize Barrier Reef.

The Lighthouse Reef is the main landmark of the Belize Barrier Reef and the Blue Hole crater is found here filled with clear waters. The Glover’s Reef is another important area of this region. The Emerald Forest is a pristine spot with its lovely collection of coral trees and elk trees. These trees form lovely canopies above with their foliage.
The turtles, porpoises, sharks, manatees and the butterfly fish swim here in the waters quite oblivious that they are a part of one of the seven world wonders. The number of endangered species here includes the American crocodile, grass flats, cays and a vast swamp of mangroves. The ecosystem here has around 36 soft coral pieces, 70 hard coral species, and around 350 mollusks. Crustaceans and sponges besides marine worms are also found here.
The Belize Barrier Reef is one of the Seven Wonders of the World also because of its collection of sea bird like the brown booby Sula, the red footed bird, the frigate birds and the brown pelican. A perfect treat for the nature lover, the bird watcher also goes berserk here.
Fishing exists here since ancient times. The Mayan civilization is believed to have used this spot today, for fishing. The reef encourages fishing thus is an important part of the economy of this place. There is proof to show that the Mayan civilization has existed here in the past.
