The turtles, porpoises, sharks, manatees and the butterfly fish swim here in the waters quite oblivious that they are a part of one of the seven world wonders. The number of endangered species here includes the American crocodile, grass flats, cays and a vast swamp of mangroves. The ecosystem here has around 36 soft coral pieces, 70 hard coral species, and around 350 mollusks. Crustaceans and sponges besides marine worms are also found here.
The Belize Barrier Reef is one of the Seven Wonders of the World also because of its collection of sea bird like the brown booby Sula, the red footed bird, the frigate birds and the brown pelican. A perfect treat for the nature lover, the bird watcher also goes berserk here.
